The first store of Safeway Inc. opened in April 1915 in American Falls, Idaho. S. M. Skaggs, a Baptist minister, was against “the growing evil of installment purchasing” in grocery stores and shops. He opened Skaggs, a store where people chose items from shelves and paid at the register. M.B. Skaggs, S.M.’s son, made an offer to buy the store for $1088, which is the same as $31500 in 2022. This was the “safe way” to buy food because it was cash and not credit. A store bill wouldn’t put a family in debt, which is what happened to many families during the Great Depression. In the fall of that year, Charles E. Merrill, who started Merrill Lynch, thought about combining West Coast food stores. He bought 322 Safeway stores from W.R.H. Weldon and gave Skaggs $1.5 million and 30,000 shares of the new company. Skaggs agreed to take both. The Skaggs/Safeway union made M.B. Skaggs CEO. After two years, Safeway joined the NYSE. In the 1930s, the grocery business was the first to use price by the pound, “sell by” dates on perishable items, nutritional information, and parking lots. After the merger, Safeway became the biggest food store chain in the West. In 1929, the company moved from Reno, Nevada, to Oakland, California, and then in 1996, it moved again, this time to Pleasanton, California. Before the year 2000, the company had grown to include Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, West Germany, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Aside from the West Coast, growth did not work. In 2014, Safeway thought about selling, and Albertson’s made an offer of $9.4 billion. On January 30, 2015, Safeway names were added to Albertsons. A merger deal says that Kroger is willing to pay $24.6 billion for Albertsons.
